Is A-Math Required for Polytechnic? What the Entry Requirements Actually Say

Polytechnic entry requirements list Mathematics as "Elementary/Additional" — either one clears the bar. A precise guide to ELR2B2, which diplomas lean on Maths, and the four routes from G2 into a polytechnic.

The published minimum entry requirement for Republic Polytechnic's Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering runs to three lines. English Language at D7. One of a list of science and technical subjects at C6. And in between, the line that answers the question this article exists for: Mathematics (Elementary/Additional): C6.

The slash is doing all the work. It means either subject clears the bar — Elementary Mathematics on its own is enough for one of the most technical diplomas a Singapore polytechnic offers. The same phrasing turns up across the engineering, computing and applied-science courses we checked at other polytechnics, and it has read that way for years. So the direct answer is no: Additional Mathematics is not required for polytechnic admission.

That answer is short enough to be unsatisfying, because it leaves the more useful questions untouched. Does A-Math help the aggregate, even if it isn't required? Which diplomas actually assume the content later, whatever the entry requirement says? And can a student in G2 reach a polytechnic at all, given that they may never sit an O-Level paper? This guide is for Sec 3 and Sec 4 students deciding whether to keep A-Math, for G2 families trying to work out whether poly is reachable, and for anyone who has been told that JC and polytechnic look at the same score. They don't, and the difference matters more than the A-Math question does. One group this guide is not written for: students on the Integrated Programme, who bypass the O-Level examination and progress within their own school, so the polytechnic aggregate below doesn't govern their Sec 4 year.

Two separate bars, and most people only know about one

Polytechnic admission through the Joint Admissions Exercise has two independent requirements, and clearing one says nothing about the other.

The first is the minimum entry requirement (MER) — a short list of subjects and grades attached to each individual course. This is where Mathematics gets named, and it is where that Elementary/Additional slash lives. The MER is a floor: fail it and the application doesn't proceed, regardless of how good the rest of the certificate looks.

The second is the aggregate — a single number computed from six subjects, which decides who actually gets the place when a course is oversubscribed. Every diploma has an aggregate cap, and popular courses fill well below theirs.

Families tend to research the aggregate obsessively and skim the MER, which is backwards for the A-Math question specifically. The MER is the only place where a subject is required, and Additional Mathematics is not the subject named there. Where A-Math can make a difference is in the second bar — the number — and that mechanism works differently than most people assume.

ELR2B2, and why L1R5 is the wrong number for poly

Junior colleges and polytechnics use different aggregates. This is not a technicality; the two are computed from different subjects, capped at different values, and one of them subtracts CCA points while the other doesn't.

MOE defines the polytechnic aggregate as English Language (EL) + 2 Relevant Subjects (R1, R2) + 2 Best Subjects (B1, B2) minus CCA bonus points, which is where the name ELR2B2 comes from. Six subjects, lower is better. For admission through the current JAE, the net aggregate must not exceed 26, with one published exception: the Diploma in Nursing, where the ELR2B2-C net aggregate must not exceed 28.

CCA bonus points are subtracted from the gross score to give the net. An excellent CCA grade is worth 2 points; a good grade (B3 to C6) is worth 1.

A Sec 4 student who calculates an L1R5 of 23, decides poly is out of reach, and stops researching has made a mistake we see every year. Those are different arithmetic on different subject sets. The number that governs a polytechnic application is the ELR2B2 for that specific course's aggregate type — and it may be several points friendlier, particularly for a student with a strong CCA grade and one weak subject that L1R5 forces them to count.

The four aggregate types — and where Maths sits in each

Every diploma is assigned one of four aggregate types, and the type determines which two of a student's subjects count as "relevant". Singapore Polytechnic publishes the rule plainly: one subject is selected from the 1st Group of Relevant Subjects and a second from the 2nd Group, and those two become R1 and R2. The remaining B1 and B2 are any two other subjects, excluding CCA.

Here is where the four types put Mathematics:

Which type a course uses is set by the course, not by the student, and it is published on the course's own page — Republic Polytechnic's Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering is ELR2B2-C, and MOE names ELR2B2-C for the Diploma in Nursing. Check your target course rather than inferring its type from the subject list above.

Read that first-group column again. In three of the four types, Mathematics is the anchor of the relevant pair — and in every one of those three, the two Maths subjects sit in the same group as alternatives to each other. In the fourth type, both appear together again, this time in the second group. Across the entire table, Elementary and Additional Mathematics are never separated. A polytechnic has no aggregate slot that only A-Math can fill.

What this does mean is that Mathematics carries unusual weight in a polytechnic application. For an engineering diploma, a student's Maths grade is one of the six subjects counted, is one of the two designated relevant subjects, and is separately named in the MER. A weak Maths grade damages a poly application three times over. That is a much better reason to take Maths seriously in Sec 3 and 4 than any claim about A-Math being a requirement.

Whether a second Maths subject also counts

This is the question worth asking if your child has already taken A-Math and wants to know whether it earns its keep on the certificate. The published rules point toward yes, with a caveat about how we got there.

For an ELR2B2-C course, R1 is drawn from the group containing both Maths subjects — so a student who sat both would have their better Maths grade taken as R1. B1 and B2 are then described as any two other subjects excluding CCA, and the unused Maths subject is not excluded from that pool. On the face of the tables, a student with A1 in A-Math and B3 in E-Math has both grades available to the aggregate: the A-Math as R1, the E-Math competing for a best-subject slot.

We are stating that as a reading of the published tables rather than as a rule MOE spells out in those words, because we could not find a source that addresses the double-Maths case directly. If it changes your child's calculation materially, confirm it with the polytechnic's admissions office before relying on it.

Which diplomas actually lean on the Maths

Admission and coping are different problems, and conflating them is how the "A-Math is required" folklore got started. Nobody is stopped at the door for lacking A-Math. Plenty of students meet the content in Year 1 anyway.

That table generalises across five polytechnics with different module structures, so read it as a shape rather than a syllabus. Singapore Polytechnic's structured Bridging Mathematics programme gives a firmer picture of what its engineering diplomas assume, because the module content is published. The bridging modules cover algebra, functions and their graphs, exponential and logarithmic functions and trigonometry; then determinants, matrices, complex numbers and calculus; then, at the next level, ordinary differential equations and Laplace transforms. Each is described as designed to integrate with a specific core module — Basic Mathematics, Engineering Mathematics I, Engineering Mathematics II.

One qualification, and it cuts against the reassuring reading. That bridging programme is aimed at ITE upgraders entering SP's engineering courses, not at O-Level entrants who skipped A-Math. A student admitted through JAE with E-Math alone is relying on whatever recap their own modules contain, which varies by polytechnic and by course. So the fair summary is that the content gap is real and the formal scaffolding for it is aimed at a different group of students. That is a coping question with a study-planning answer, and it does not change who gets admitted.

The requirement also has a way of resurfacing further downstream than most Sec 3 families are thinking about. NUS requires polytechnic diploma holders entering Data Science and Analytics, Mathematics, Physics, Quantitative Finance or Statistics to take MA1301 Introductory Mathematics in Year 1 — a module pitched at H2 Mathematics content — unless they hold a Diploma Plus or related mathematics certification from their polytechnic, complete the equivalent module through iBLOCs, or pass the MA1301 proficiency test at matriculation. A student can travel the whole route from Sec 3 to a university mathematics-heavy degree without ever facing A-Math as an admission requirement, and still meet the mathematics itself three separate times.

Can a G2 student get into a polytechnic?

Yes — through four routes, and the one most often described online is not among them.

That correction comes first, because families plan around it. The Polytechnic Early Admissions Exercise is frequently described in forums and guide articles as open to N-Level students. MOE's Poly EAE eligibility criteria set requirements for two groups only: O-Level holders, who need a net ELR2B2 of 26 or better (28 for Nursing), and final-year ITE students, who need a final net GPA of 2.5 or better for Higher Nitec or 3.5 or better for Nitec. MOE's own list of admissions exercises for N-Level students contains the PFP, the DPP and the Joint Intake Exercise — Poly EAE is not among them. A G2 family planning around a Poly EAE application after N-Levels is planning around something that isn't offered.

The four routes that do exist:

1. The Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP). A one-year programme at a polytechnic, taken instead of Sec 5, leading into Year 1 of a diploma. MOE describes it as the route for Sec 4 Normal (Academic) students to apply directly to polytechnics. Eligibility needs an ELMAB3 raw aggregate — English, Mathematics and the best 3 other subjects — of 12 points or better, excluding CCA bonus points, plus at least N(A)-Level Grade 3 in English Language, Mathematics and one relevant subject, and Grade 4 in the two remaining subjects that make up the aggregate. Where a subject was taken at O-Level as well, the better grade is used, on a published conversion table. Eligibility does not guarantee a place; PFP admission is competitive and depends on vacancies.

2. The Direct-Entry-Scheme to Polytechnic Programme (DPP). This one runs through ITE rather than straight into a polytechnic: a two-year Higher Nitec course, and on completing it with the required minimum GPA, MOE says the student is guaranteed a place in a polytechnic diploma mapped to that Higher Nitec course. Eligibility needs an ELMAB3 of 19 points or less excluding bonus points, English Language (Syllabus A) at Grade 1–4 for applied sciences, engineering and ICT (1–3 for business, services and hospitality), Mathematics (Syllabus A or Additional) at Grade 1–4, and Grade 1–5 in each of three other best subjects.

3. Sec 5, then the national examination at the end of it. The longest of the four, and the only one that keeps junior college on the table. For students sitting N-Levels in 2026, what waits at the end of Sec 5 has changed — see the transition section below before treating this as the safe default.

4. ITE through the Joint Intake Exercise, then Nitec or Higher Nitec, then a polytechnic diploma on the strength of the ITE GPA.

Look at the Mathematics line in the DPP requirements: Syllabus A or Additional. The same slash, at a different gate. At every published entry point into a Singapore polytechnic that we checked, Mathematics is named and one of the two Maths subjects satisfies it. Not once is Additional Mathematics the subject that has to be there.

The G2 route to junior college

Reachable, and harder than the poly routes, for a reason that has more to do with Mathematics than with the admission criteria.

The mechanics are straightforward enough: Sec 5, then O-Levels, then JC admission on L1R5 with a gross aggregate not exceeding 20 for the current cohort. Sec 5 eligibility is set by the school on N-Level results and teacher assessment.

The harder part sits inside the JC. The great majority of JC students take H2 Mathematics, and the H2 syllabus treats A-Math content as assumed knowledge rather than teaching it — so a student who arrives without it is bridging a real gap while also absorbing JC pace. A G2 student who was never offered A-Math, or who took it at N(A) standard, is starting that transition further back than a classmate who sat O-Level A-Math in Sec 4. This is the one place in the whole post-secondary system where the A-Math question genuinely bites at the point of admission, and it is a junior college question rather than a polytechnic one.

What changes for the cohort behind this one

The November 2026 sitting is the final GCE O-Level and N-Level examination. From 2027, both are replaced by the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate, which records each subject at the level it was taken — G1, G2 or G3 — on a single certificate. Admissions follow a year behind: from 2028, a single Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise replaces the Joint Admissions Exercise, and the numbers move.

The acronym ELR2B2 survives the change while the cap tightens by four points, which is a good way to get badly confused if you're reading an article that doesn't say which cohort it's describing. Check the year before trusting any figure, including the ones above.

One transitional detail that catches G2 families specifically, and that we have inferred rather than read verbatim: a student sitting N-Levels in late 2026 who then goes on to Sec 5 in 2027 will not find an O-Level paper waiting at the end of it, because 2026 was the last one. On MOE's published timeline they would sit the SEC in 2027 and be admitted in 2028 under the new exercise — which is the tighter ELR2B2 cap of 22, not the 26 their Sec 4 classmates were working toward. If your child is weighing Sec 5 against the PFP this January, that is a question to put to the school directly rather than to take from us, because the two options may sit under different admission systems.

What we could not verify

Four things we would have liked to state more firmly:

  • Whether any polytechnic diploma anywhere requires A-Math specifically. We checked the published requirements for the engineering, computing and applied-science courses most often assumed to need it, and each names Mathematics with the Elementary/Additional slash. We did not audit every diploma across all five polytechnics. If your target course is unusual, read its own entry-requirement page rather than generalising from this one.
  • The double-Maths aggregate question, described above — a reading of the tables, not a quoted rule.
  • How many polytechnic entrants actually took A-Math. No published figure that we could trace. Any percentage you see quoted on this should be treated as an estimate.
  • Course-specific cut-offs under the 2028 exercise. Not finalised at the time of writing. Aggregate ranges quoted for current courses — Republic Polytechnic's Electrical & Electronic Engineering diploma admitted a net ELR2B2 range of 11 to 26 in the 2026 JAE, for instance — describe the intake that happened, not a guarantee for the next one.

A note on our own position: we run a Mathematics tuition programme, so we have an obvious commercial interest in families concluding that Maths matters. We have tried to write against that interest where the evidence points that way — the honest answer to the headline question is that a subject we teach is not required, and a student aiming at a polytechnic can drop A-Math without closing a single door at the point of admission.

Every requirement above comes from a primary source: MOE's post-secondary admissions pages for the JAE polytechnic criteria, Poly EAE eligibility, the PFP and DPP eligibility criteria and the N-Level admissions listing; the aggregate computation tables published by Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic; Republic Polytechnic's course pages for the worked entry requirement; Singapore Polytechnic's Bridging Mathematics module descriptions; and NUS's College of Humanities and Sciences page on polytechnic bridging courses. The Additional Mathematics (4049) and Mathematics (4052) syllabus documents are published by SEAB. MOE's SchoolFinder and CourseFinder tools carry the current MER and aggregate range for every individual diploma, and are the right place to check a specific course rather than a general guide.

The one thing to remember: No polytechnic diploma requires Additional Mathematics for admission — the entry requirement reads "Mathematics (Elementary/Additional)", and one Maths subject satisfies it at every gate, including the PFP and DPP routes from G2. Mathematics itself carries real weight, because it is simultaneously an MER subject and the anchor of the relevant pair in three of the four ELR2B2 aggregate types. Take the subject seriously; take the A-Math decision on its own merits.

A note on accuracy: Singapore's post-secondary admission system is mid-transition, and the figures here are split deliberately between the current cohort and the SEC cohort behind it. Entry requirements, aggregate ranges and course lists are also revised annually. Verify current requirements for your child's specific course through MOE's CourseFinder or the polytechnic's own admissions page before making a decision on them.
