Sec 3 Pure Chemistry Tuition

Our tutors help Sec 3 Pure Chemistry students explain properties using particles and bonding, balance equations and work through calculations. Lessons use current schoolwork and review earlier ideas when they are needed.

Live online classes · Maximum 4 students · 1.5 hours weekly

What we practise

  • Connect atomic structure, bonding and the properties of substances
  • Write formulae and balance equations without changing substances
  • Use chemical quantities and mole ratios with clear working
  • Distinguish observations, explanations and experimental conclusions

Explain a property from the particles involved

For a structure-and-property question, identify the substance’s particles and how they are arranged. Then connect that model to the property asked about. Conductivity needs mobile charged particles; a melting-point explanation concerns the interactions that must be overcome. The correct chain depends on the structure, so a rehearsed sentence cannot fit every substance.

Our tutors ask students to explain one state of a substance and then predict what changes in another. This exposes whether the student understands the model or merely remembers a phrase. Keep the explanation specific: name the particles, describe the relevant change and state how it accounts for the observed behaviour.

The task

Why does sodium chloride conduct electricity when molten but not when solid?

Worked response

In the solid, its ions are held in fixed positions in the lattice. When molten, the ions can move and carry charge, so an electric current can flow.

The explanation names the charge carriers and their mobility. It does not claim that electrons become free or that the ions appear only on melting.

Make the equation part of the calculation

Before using numbers, write the balanced reaction and identify the quantities given and required. Convert the known quantity into the form needed, use the equation’s mole relationship, then convert to the requested quantity. Units and substance names help keep each stage attached to the chemical meaning.

If a student changes a subscript to balance an equation, review what the formula means first. Then return to the calculation. We check these earlier ideas when they cause mistakes in current schoolwork.

Common difficulties

Definitions are remembered but explanations break down

Students practise naming the particles, explaining whether they can move and linking that to conductivity.

A calculation starts with the wrong relationship

The arithmetic may be correct for an incorrect chemical setup. Our tutors check the equation and the quantity being calculated before using a formula.

How our tutors help

Use particles to explain what happens

We use words, particle diagrams and chemical symbols to describe the same substance or reaction.

Ask why the next step follows

During calculations, the tutor checks the meaning of each quantity and ratio. This reveals an earlier misconception that a final answer alone can hide.

Revisit prerequisites through practice

Students practise concepts between classes and revisit earlier work through spaced review. Their answers show the tutor what needs another explanation.

Getting started

Arrange a trial class

Bring recent schoolwork so the tutor can plan the first lesson.

Bring a recent piece of work

We read the questions, your child’s answers and teacher feedback to choose what to work on.

Confirm the right class

We message you to confirm the school programme, 2027 year level and lesson time.

Try a lesson

A trial class lets your child meet the teacher, take part and see how the lessons work.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

Is there a fixed national Sec 3 Pure Chemistry topic order?

Schools organise the topic order. We use the current topic list and teacher feedback to choose what to work on, while following the syllabus learning outcomes.

Can online tuition help with practical Chemistry?

We teach experimental reasoning, interpretation of observations, data presentation and planning questions through discussion and written work. Handling apparatus and carrying out laboratory procedures remain skills developed through the student’s supervised school practical work.

What should we bring if calculations are the main concern?

Bring the working, including wrong or unfinished steps. The tutor checks the formulae, equation, quantities, ratios and arithmetic to find where the mistake started.

Is registration open for 2027?

Class registration for the 2027 school year is open. Request a trial class using the form. We will message you to confirm your child’s 2027 level and class details.

Is practice included?

Yes. Students practise on DeepThink between their weekly live online lessons.
