Sec 3 Combined Science (Chemistry) Tuition: G2

Our tutors help Sec 3 G2 students understand particles, read formulae and explain reactions. We work through short examples together, then ask your child to try another question without help.

Live online classes · Maximum 4 students · 1.5 hours weekly

What we practise

  • Distinguish elements, compounds and mixtures using particle ideas
  • Read chemical formulae and conserve atoms in equations
  • Explain core acid-base and separation concepts
  • Use the question’s wording to give a relevant short answer

Syllabus & assessment

Choose a separation method for a reason

A separation question begins with the properties of the mixture. Is a solid dissolved or suspended? Is the desired substance the solid, the liquid or both? Those decisions explain why a method works. Starting with a remembered apparatus diagram can lead a student to choose a familiar method for the wrong mixture.

Our tutors ask students to predict what remains at each stage. For filtration, what passes through and what stays behind? For obtaining a dissolved solid, which part needs to be removed? The student can then explain the method in words and recognise when a different starting mixture needs a different approach.

Original practice exampleAn original separation example

The task

A mixture contains sand and salt dissolved in water. What does filtration separate?

Worked response

The sand remains as residue, while the salt solution passes through as the filtrate.

Dissolved salt is not trapped by the filter paper. Naming the substances in the residue and filtrate shows whether the student understands the method.

Connect chemical language to a clear response

Changing a formula changes the substance. When balancing an equation, keep the formulae and change the coefficients. Count one element at a time and check all the atoms again at the end.

For written answers, identify the command first. “State” may need a concise fact; “explain” needs the reason connected to the situation. Our tutors keep examples within the G2 course requirements.

Common difficulties

Chemical symbols look like a code to memorise

We connect a formula to the particles and proportions it represents. The student learns what a small number changes before using symbols in an equation.

The correct topic is named but the answer is incomplete

“Filtration” can identify a method without explaining why it works. We teach students to link the method to the relevant property of the substances.

How our tutors help

Start with one clear distinction

We compare ideas such as compound and mixture, or soluble and insoluble, before using them in a question.

Model the explanation, then change the example

Students explain a familiar situation, then apply the same idea to a different one. This checks understanding without relying on identical wording.

Use practice to choose the next lesson

Practice and spaced review revisit the work taught in class. The tutor checks your child’s answers to choose the next lesson.

Getting started

Arrange a trial class

Bring recent schoolwork so the tutor can plan the first lesson.

Bring a recent piece of work

We read the questions, your child’s answers and teacher feedback to choose what to work on.

Confirm the right class

We message you to confirm the school programme, 2027 year level and lesson time.

Try a lesson

A trial class lets your child meet the teacher, take part and see how the lessons work.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

Does G2 Combined Chemistry have the same scope as G3?

G2 and G3 have separate syllabus documents and learning outcomes. We teach the G2 Chemistry component and check school materials against that course. The syllabus guide compares the published topic headings without treating a shared heading as identical content.

Is there a separate practical paper in the 2027 G2 scheme?

The 2027 G2 Science scheme has multiple-choice and structured papers for each science. Experimental skills are assessed in written questions and practised through school laboratory work.

Can tuition help if my child has lost confidence in Science?

We start with a short question and work through it together. The tutor explains why the answer works, then gives your child another example to try without help.

Is registration open for 2027?

Class registration for the 2027 school year is open. Request a trial class using the form. We will message you to confirm your child’s 2027 level and class details.

Is practice included?

Yes. Students practise on DeepThink between their weekly live online lessons.
