Syllabus & assessment

G2 Science assessment: K223 and K225

Sources checked 6 October 2026. G2 Science pairs Chemistry with Physics or Biology. Each science has a Multiple Choice and Structured pair taken in one 1 hour 15 minute session. SEAB advises spending no more than 30 minutes on Multiple Choice. Chemistry uses Papers 3 and 4; experimental skills are assessed in written questions. The weightings below apply to the whole science combination.

Connect formulae and equations to what they represent

A formula describes a substance and the proportions of its atoms. An equation describes a reaction. Students need to understand both before using symbols in a calculation. Our tutors ask your child to name the substances, explain the formulae and account for each element on both sides of an equation.

Some knowledge needs deliberate memorisation. Definitions, common formulae and the results of chemical tests should be recalled accurately. Our tutors separate these facts from the reasoning a question requires, then practise using both together.

When balancing, keep the formulae and change the coefficients. Count one element at a time, then check every atom again. For calculations, name the quantity being found, show the values used and include the unit. Clear working helps the tutor find where the chemistry or arithmetic needs attention.

Give the observation, then explain what it tells you

An observation says what is seen or measured. A conclusion says what the result shows. Read the command word before answering: a question asking for an observation needs the visible change, while a question asking what a test shows needs the chemical conclusion.

Our tutors use written experiment questions to practise this distinction. Students identify the relevant result, explain the method and use the information given to support an answer. School laboratory work gives them experience of carrying out the methods themselves.

Original practice exampleReading a gas-test result

The task

A gas is bubbled through limewater, which turns milky. What is the observation, and what does the test show?

Worked response

Observation: the limewater turns milky. The test shows that the gas contains carbon dioxide.

The visible change is the observation. Identifying carbon dioxide is the conclusion drawn from the test.

Prepare for multiple-choice and structured questions

Chemistry multiple-choice and structured papers share one exam session in the 2027 G2 scheme. Practise both types of question. For a structured question, identify the command word and use the scientific keywords that make the answer precise. Connect those words to the fact, reason or working the question asks for.

When the basics need rebuilding, a multiple-choice question can begin with what your child already knows. Rule out an option that contradicts a known fact or the information given. Explain why it cannot be right, then work through the remaining choices. This gives the tutor a clear starting point for teaching the missing idea.

Our tutors use recurring mistakes to choose revision tasks. Your child might revisit dissolved and insoluble substances, balance another equation or explain a different set of experimental results. Instant marking and spaced review support practice between classes. Plan revision for the other science as well, since both contribute to the G2 Science result.

Common difficulties

The basic facts are hard to recall

Definitions, formulae and test results need to be known accurately. We help students remember them and connect each fact to the chemical idea it describes.

Short answers leave out the reason

A correct idea can be hard to recognise in vague wording. We teach the keywords and the reason needed to explain a property, observation or method clearly.

How our tutors help

Rebuild the idea and the facts it needs

We explain the concept through examples, identify what needs to be memorised and check that your child can recall and use it.

Learn how to approach the question

We teach students to read command words, use precise keywords and give the reason. For multiple choice, known facts help them rule out clearly wrong options.

Check understanding during the lesson

Short questions ask your child to explain an idea and try it with another substance or set of data. The tutor checks the response and works through any confusion.

Getting started

Arrange a trial class

Bring recent schoolwork so the tutor can plan the first lesson.

Bring a recent piece of work

We read the questions, your child’s answers and teacher feedback to choose what to work on.

Confirm the right class

We message you to confirm the school programme, 2027 year level and lesson time.

Try a lesson

A trial class lets your child meet the teacher, take part and see how the lessons work.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no class matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much is a trial class?

A trial class costs $30.

Which science combinations does this class support?

The class teaches the Chemistry component of G2 Science for students taking Physics/Chemistry or Chemistry/Biology. The 2027 syllabuses are K223 and K225 respectively.

How is G2 Science (Chemistry) assessed in 2027?

Chemistry uses Paper 3 Multiple Choice and Paper 4 Structured, worth 20 and 30 marks respectively. They are taken together in a 1 hour 15 minute session. The assessment table above gives the weightings for the whole science combination.

How do students prepare for experimental questions?

G2 experimental skills are assessed through written questions. Our tutors help students explain methods, describe observations and interpret data. Students also practise handling apparatus during school laboratory work.

Can tuition help with repeated mistakes in basic topics?

Bring a few recent answers and teacher feedback as soon as the confusion keeps returning. Later topics reuse earlier ideas, so gaps can accumulate. Rebuilding several chapters takes time, even when a student is working hard; starting early gives us time to explain the basics and check them through practice.

What should we share when requesting a trial class?

Share recent Chemistry work and the course confirmed by the school. After the request, we message you to confirm the 2027 school year, science combination and lesson time.

Is registration open for 2027?

Class registration for the 2027 school year is open. Request a trial class using the form. We will message you to confirm your child’s 2027 level and class details.

Is practice included?

Yes. Students practise on DeepThink between their weekly live online lessons.
