Sec 3 IP Chemistry tuition

Our tutors help Sec 3 IP students understand particles, bonding and equations, then use them in explanations and calculations. Lessons follow current school assignments and revisit earlier ideas where needed.

Live online classes · Maximum 4 students · 1.5 hours weekly

Foundations selected from the current schoolwork

  • Identify atoms, ions and molecules accurately
  • Explain properties using the relevant structure
  • Balance equations and interpret their ratios
  • Keep quantities, substance labels and units together

Syllabus & assessment

Check your school’s current programme

The school sources below describe their IP programmes. Use your child’s current topic list and assessment scope to plan lessons.

Translate between particles, words and chemical symbols

A formula, particle diagram and written description can show the same substance. Check what each symbol means. In MgCl₂, the subscript shows a ratio of one magnesium ion to two chloride ions. The particle drawing should show that ratio too.

When balancing an equation, change coefficients to conserve atoms of each element. Do not alter a substance’s formula to make the atom count work. Explain what the balanced equation says in words, then use that interpretation to identify the amount ratio needed in a question. This sequence connects the algebra to the chemistry.

We follow the school’s current assignments. If a new topic is difficult, we check earlier ideas such as particle models and symbols before moving on.

Original practice exampleUse a mole ratio without turning it into a mass ratio

The task

For 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO, 0.12 mol of magnesium reacts completely with oxygen in excess. How much magnesium oxide forms?

Worked response

The equation gives a 2:2, or 1:1, mole ratio between magnesium and magnesium oxide. Therefore 0.12 mol of MgO forms. Oxygen is in excess, so magnesium determines the amount formed.

The answer names both substances and uses the stated excess condition. The ratio compares amounts in moles; it would not justify saying that equal masses of magnesium and magnesium oxide are involved.

Use teacher feedback to improve an answer

Keep the original question beside the marked answer. Underline the command word and identify the precise property, observation or change the student was asked to explain. An answer can contain correct facts and still miss that target. Locate the first place where the reasoning stops: identifying the structure, naming a relevant interaction, or linking it to the property.

Rewrite that link in one complete explanation, then check a fresh example. If a student corrects an ionic-conductivity answer, ask what changes when the same compound melts or dissolves. The follow-up should require applying the model, not simply repeating the corrected sentence.

Keep a short note of the first mistake and its correction. Use the school topic list to choose what to revise and try the corrected step again after a few days. Practice between lessons revisits what the tutor taught.

Distinguish what an experiment shows from why it happens

Describe observations in terms that could be recorded: a colour change, a precipitate or a measured gas volume. A chemical explanation accounts for that result using substances, particles or reactions. Keep the two separate until the task asks you to connect them.

Before making a conclusion, check what was changed, what was measured and what was held constant. If a school task asks for a fair comparison, an uncontrolled temperature or unequal starting quantity may matter more than a vague instruction to “be accurate”. Explain how the proposed control affects the comparison. Online lessons support that reasoning while the school provides hands-on apparatus practice.

Where schoolwork reveals a gap

Familiar facts in an unfamiliar setting

A question supplies a new substance or process. Students need to identify which familiar principle applies and explain why.

Working that hides an assumption

Students check whether the question states that a reagent is in excess and which gas-volume conditions to use before calculating.

How we support the school course

Read the task and feedback together

We use the current topic list, assessment scope and teacher comments to choose what to practise.

Explain each step

Students explain how the diagram, equation or data helps them answer the question.

Try another set of conditions

We change the conditions or values and ask the student to explain whether the same method still applies.

Getting started

Arrange a trial class

Bring recent schoolwork so the tutor can plan the first lesson.

Bring a recent piece of work

We read the questions, your child’s answers and teacher feedback to choose what to work on.

Confirm the right class

We message you to confirm the school programme, 2027 year level and lesson time.

Try a lesson

A trial class lets your child meet the teacher, take part and see how the lessons work.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

Which topics come first in Sec 3 IP Chemistry?

The sequence depends on the school. Bring the current topic list and assignments. We check prerequisites such as particles, formulae and equations where they are needed for that work.

Can a student join when the class has moved ahead?

Share recent work and the upcoming assessment scope. We discuss which prerequisite gaps need attention and confirm a suitable class before enrolment.

How can parents help with revision?

Ask your child to explain a calculation or answer, then try a related question without looking at the model. Keep the school’s comments with the question so the tutor can review repeated mistakes.

Is registration open for 2027?
