Sec 1 IB pathway English tuition

Our tutors help Sec 1 and Year 1 students at IB pathway schools understand texts, explain a writer’s choices and write analytical paragraphs. Lessons use your child’s schoolwork, with time to discuss an idea before putting it into writing.

Live online classes · Maximum 4 students · 1.5 hours weekly

What we practise

  • Read accurately and select details that answer the question
  • Explain a character’s actions and the effect of a writer’s choices
  • Write a paragraph with a claim, evidence and explanation
  • Share an interpretation and listen to another view

Build an analytical paragraph from one observation

Start with a question about the passage: what does an action reveal, why does a place feel uncomfortable, or how does a description affect the reader? Choose one detail that helps answer it. State the interpretation, include the relevant evidence and explain the connection. A paragraph does not need to retell every event before making its point.

Say what happens in the passage, then explain what it suggests. Check the surrounding sentences: if another detail points to a different interpretation, adjust the answer.

Original practice exampleAn original character example

The task

“Leo left the last slice on the plate, though he had barely eaten.” What could the action suggest?

Worked response

Leaving the slice despite his hunger suggests that Leo is considering someone else’s needs. The contrast between what he wants and what he does supports that interpretation.

The answer explains the action rather than only labelling Leo as generous. More context would help establish whom he is thinking of.

Use discussion to strengthen the next written answer

Ask the student to explain an answer aloud before extending it in writing. A listener can ask which detail led to the view or why a character’s choice matters. Those questions reveal an unstated step in the reasoning. The student can then add that step to the paragraph in their own words.

Bring the school’s passage, question and teacher comments. We use these to choose what to practise, whether the assignment involves a story, poem, non-fiction text or presentation.

Common difficulties

A response tells the story again

Students may understand the events without explaining their significance. We use a short passage to practise connecting what happens to what the reader learns.

A quotation is left unexplained

Students explain why a quotation supports their point, then include that explanation in the paragraph.

How our tutors help

Read a recent school response

The assignment, the student’s answer and teacher feedback show which reading or writing skill needs attention first.

Talk through the interpretation

The tutor asks what your child noticed and which words led to that view. Discussing the answer helps them write it clearly.

Apply the skill independently

A new extract checks whether the student can choose evidence and explain it. Targeted practice and spaced review reinforce the lesson.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

Which Year 1 students do these classes support?

We support Sec 1 and Year 1 English and Language Arts students at IB pathway schools. Support currently covers ACS (Independent), St Joseph’s Institution (SJI), Hwa Chong International School (HCIS), Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) and School of the Arts (SOTA). Lessons use their current schoolwork.

Can a student start before receiving a school assignment?

Bring a recent English exercise. If school assignments are not available yet, the tutor can use a short reading and writing task to decide where to start.

How can parents help with an analytical paragraph?

Ask what the student thinks the passage suggests and which words support that view. Encourage them to explain the link. Keep the assignment and teacher comments together so the tutor can help with the next revision.
