Secondary 1 English Tuition

Secondary English often asks for more explanation than students are used to. Our tutors help Sec 1 students understand what a question needs, write fuller answers and join in discussion. Choose your child’s English course below to see what we teach.

What we practise

  • Understand what a reading question asks and find relevant evidence
  • Write complete sentences and paragraphs with a clear point
  • Explain a view with enough detail for a listener to follow
  • Apply reading, writing and speaking skills to current schoolwork

Syllabus & assessment

Syllabus sources

G1, G2 and G3 have separate national assessment requirements, linked on their course pages. IP lessons follow school materials. Source checked 10 October 2026.

English skills in Sec 1

G1 lessons focus on language use, reading and everyday communication. G2 and G3 students also practise using reading evidence, developing paragraphs and explaining opinions aloud. Each course has its own later assessment tasks.

For IP and IB pathway English or Language Arts, lessons work from the school’s texts and assignment brief. The course links on this page explain the teaching priorities for each programme.

Look at the answer, not just the new mark

If your child’s mark drops after moving to secondary school, look at a question beside their answer. Did they miss an instruction, choose the wrong evidence, leave out an explanation or struggle to write the idea clearly? Each problem needs a different kind of help.

The tutor works on that difficulty with your child, helps them revise the answer and gives them another task to try. At home, ask them to explain what they changed and why.

Original practice exampleAn original transition example

The task

A response says, “The character is kind.” The question asks how the passage shows kindness. What could the answer need?

Worked response

A relevant action from the passage and an explanation of how that action helps someone.

Calling the character kind needs support. The answer should name an action from the passage and explain how it shows kindness.

Common difficulties

New tasks take time to get used to

A student who did well in primary school may be unsure how to answer a new type of question. We work through an example and explain what the answer needs.

How our tutors help

Start with a recent assignment

The tutor reads a recent task and your child’s answer, then asks them to talk through it. This helps us decide where to start.

Show what a fuller answer needs

We demonstrate the part your child missed, then ask them to try it in another answer.

Practise between classes

Students practise what they learned and revisit earlier work through spaced review. Their answers help the tutor plan the next lesson.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

Which English courses do you teach in Sec 1?

We teach G1, G2 and G3 English, plus school-based English and Language Arts for IP and IB pathway students. Each course page describes the skills we work on in class.

Should tuition start with PSLE revision or secondary work?

Recent work helps us decide. Your child may need practice with an earlier skill, such as sentence structure, or help answering a new kind of secondary question.

What if we do not yet have secondary schoolwork?

Share a recent English exercise and the confirmed school programme when available. The tutor can use a short reading or writing task to find a starting point. We confirm the 2027 school year, course and schedule by message.

Is registration open for 2027?

Class registration for the 2027 school year is open. Request a trial class using the form. We will message you to confirm your child’s 2027 level and class details.
