Our tutors help Sec 3 and Year 3 students at IB pathway schools choose evidence from longer texts and organise it into clear essays. Lessons work on analysis, argument and writing using current school assignments.

Begin with a provisional answer to the question, then test it against the text. Choose details that contribute different parts of the reasoning. A point about a narrator’s reliability, for example, needs more than several quotations showing a similar tone. Consider what the narrator notices, omits or contradicts and how those choices shape the reader’s judgement.
Decide what each paragraph adds. One might explain the first impression of a character; another might show how that impression changes. Review this order before editing sentences.
The task
A narrator repeatedly calls a neighbour “careless” but later admits never having spoken to her. How could the later admission affect an interpretation?
Worked response
The admission makes the earlier judgement less secure. It suggests that the narrator’s view may depend on assumptions rather than direct knowledge, so the reader has reason to question the description.
The answer connects two details and explains how one changes the significance of the other. The argument would need further evidence from the complete text.

An analytical response explains how a text works; an argumentative piece develops a position for its audience. Both need clear reasoning, but they make different demands on evidence and expression. Read the school task carefully, decide what the reader needs to understand and check whether each paragraph contributes to that purpose.
Choose one part to revise: explain why a quotation supports the point, address another view or rewrite an unclear sentence. Ask the student why the change helps. For a presentation, practise the explanation aloud and add follow-up questions.
Students may notice several useful choices without explaining their relationship. We organise the evidence around a claim that answers the question.
The tutor helps the student test an interpretation against the whole passage or work and make the claim more precise where necessary.
A recent essay and teacher feedback show whether the next lesson should focus on the claim, evidence, explanation or organisation.
The student explains how each selected detail supports the point, considers a challenge and revises the reasoning.
Students answer a different prompt to check whether they can choose and explain evidence without help. Practice and spaced review revisit earlier work.

Frequently asked questions
Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

Lessons use the student’s current English or Language Arts texts, task sheets and responses. We teach comprehension, literary analysis, writing and spoken explanation through that work.
The offer currently covers Sec 3 and Year 3 students at ACS (Independent), St Joseph’s Institution (SJI), Hwa Chong International School (HCIS), Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) and School of the Arts (SOTA). Lessons use their English or Language Arts texts and assignments.
A recent essay can show where the reasoning needs development. We practise selecting evidence, explaining its significance and considering a complication, then check the skill in a new response.
