Secondary 3 English Tuition

Sec 3 English brings longer writing tasks and more demanding comprehension questions. Our tutors help students plan an answer, explain their ideas and check their work. Lessons follow your child’s course and recent school assignments, with timed practice when they are ready.

What we practise

  • Complete longer answers while staying on topic
  • Use evidence and explanation to develop a response
  • Review earlier skills that still need practice before adding timing
  • Prepare for the assessment demands of the actual English course

English assessment preparation in Sec 3

The 2027 G1 assessment includes language-use cloze and reading aloud. G2 and G3 include summary and a planned oral response, with different writing requirements. We practise the tasks for the student’s course.

IP and IB pathway English or Language Arts lessons use the school’s text, brief and criteria. The course pages below show the kinds of reasoning and writing each route develops.

Find where an answer loses its way

Read the whole answer beside the question. A composition may start well but drift as an example gets too long. A comprehension answer may find the right quotation and leave it unexplained. Identify that point before rewriting.

The tutor helps the student revise that part and try another task. Keep a short revision note they can use next time, such as “check each paragraph answers the question” or “explain why this detail matters”.

The task

A student is writing to recommend a school activity. The draft describes the activity in detail but never explains why it suits the students. What is the next step?

Worked response

Add a reason tied to the students’ needs and explain how the activity meets it.

A recommendation needs a reason. Describing the activity alone leaves the reader unsure why they should choose it.

Common difficulties

Longer answers are harder to organise

A student may do well on short exercises but struggle to plan or finish a longer answer. We work on the part where they lose track.

How our tutors help

Review an attempt before setting another paper

The tutor reads a complete answer and asks the student to explain it. This shows whether they need help with the content, planning or time management.

Build a sequence the student understands

We show students how to work through a task, then let them try. Timed practice helps us see which parts take too long.

Follow up between lessons

Students practise what they learned in class and revisit earlier work through spaced review. Their answers help the tutor choose the next lesson’s focus.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

Should Sec 3 tuition be mostly exam practice?

We use both focused exercises and exam practice. A full paper shows where a student struggles; a short task gives them time to work on that skill. Recent answers and upcoming assessments help us choose the balance.

How do you support a student moving to a different English level?

Share the school’s advice and recent English work. We can help your child practise the skills needed for the change and discuss a suitable class.

What makes a trial class useful at this stage?

A marked assignment or paper shows the tutor how the student handles a complete task. Bring the feedback as well as the mark. The team will confirm the 2027 level, programme and schedule after the request.

Is registration open for 2027?
