Read the format, then plan the practice

  • Four papers assess writing, comprehension, listening and oral communication
  • Marks and percentage weightings differ: use the weighting when allocating revision time
  • The tables below describe SEC G3 English, not IP, MYP or G2 English

2027 G3 English: papers, marks and timings

Verified on 5 October 2026 against SEAB’s K300 syllabus, pages 4–6. All four papers are required. The marks total 180; each paper contributes according to its stated weighting.

Paper 1: writing tasks and lengths

Editing carries 10 marks. Situational Writing carries 30 marks and asks for 250–350 words suited to the purpose, audience and context. Continuous Writing carries 30 marks: choose one of four topics and write 350–500 words.

Paper 2: comprehension and summary

Section A uses two texts, one visual, for 5 marks. Section B uses a narrative or recount for 20 marks. Section C uses a non-narrative text for 25 marks and includes an approximately 80-word summary, excluding the supplied introductory words.

Papers 3 and 4: listening and oral communication

Listening Section A is worth 22 marks, with recordings heard twice. Section B is an 8-mark note-taking exercise heard once. Oral Communication divides its 30 marks equally between Planned Response and Spoken Interaction; the planned response is up to two minutes.

SEC is the examination name from 2027

The SEC replaces the separate O-Level and N-Level examinations from 2027. G1, G2 and G3 describe subject levels. This page reports G3 English only; an IP school assignment, MYP assessment or G2 paper needs its own requirements.

Where students need support

Raw marks can mislead revision priorities

Writing carries 70 marks and comprehension 50, but both contribute 35% of the overall grade. Planning only by raw marks gives the wrong balance.

Knowing the sections is not enough

A student also needs to manage the time available and complete each task as instructed. Short timed practice can reveal where time is lost.

Speaking and listening are left until late

Together these papers account for 30% of the grade. Regular practice gives students time to improve beyond a single rehearsal.

What we work on in class

Match practice to a paper

Choose a task with a specific aim, such as selecting summary points or developing the planned oral response.

Review the response against the task

Check purpose, audience, evidence and word limit as relevant. A useful correction explains what to change in the next attempt.

Use the format with school feedback

The table is a planning aid. Recent schoolwork shows which skills need the most attention now.

Getting started

Start with the work your child is doing now

A recent school assignment gives the teacher a useful starting point.

Bring a recent piece of work

We look at the questions, the response and the feedback to identify what needs attention first.

Confirm the right class

We message each family to confirm the school programme, level for 2027 and a suitable lesson time.

Try a lesson

A trial class lets your child meet the teacher, take part and see how the lessons work.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

Does the 2027 guide apply to a 2026 O-Level candidate?

This guide reports the 2027 SEC G3 K300 syllabus. A 2026 O-Level candidate should use SEAB’s syllabus for their own examination year rather than assume every detail carries over.

How long is the oral planned response?

The 2027 K300 syllabus specifies a planned response of up to two minutes, followed by spoken interaction. The overall oral paper lasts about 20 minutes including 10 minutes of preparation.

Is registration open for 2027?
