Sec 1 IP English Tuition

Sec 1 IP English and Language Arts introduces new texts and questions that ask students to explain an interpretation. Our tutors use the school’s assignments to help your child read closely, choose evidence and write analytical paragraphs.

Live online classes · Maximum 4 students · 1.5 hours weekly

What we practise

  • Read a short literary extract closely and support an interpretation
  • Connect a writer’s choices to meaning in the passage
  • Organise an analytical paragraph with a clear claim
  • Prepare to contribute an idea and respond in discussion

Syllabus & assessment

Syllabus sources

IP schools set their own English and Language Arts assignments. Lessons use the student’s texts, questions and teacher feedback. The MOE programme source below was checked 10 October 2026.

A first analytical paragraph needs a precise observation

Begin with a small question about the extract: why does a character avoid an answer, why does the setting feel unwelcoming, or why does the narrator repeat a detail? Choose the wording that helps answer it. The paragraph should grow from that observation, with context just sufficient for the reader to follow.

First describe what happens, then explain what it suggests and which words support that reading. Students talk through these steps before writing the paragraph.

The task

“When the prize was announced, Sam clapped with his eyes fixed on the floor.” What tension does the sentence suggest?

Worked response

Sam joins the applause, but looking down suggests discomfort with the result. His public action and private reaction seem to differ.

The contrast supports the interpretation. The sentence alone does not establish the precise reason for his discomfort; a fuller extract might change the reading.

Use the school text to choose the next teaching step

Bring the school’s question and text, whether it is a poem, novel extract, speech or non-fiction passage. We work on the skill the assignment needs, such as explaining the speaker’s voice or supporting an interpretation.

Parents can help by asking what the child thinks a passage means and which line led to that view. There is no need to supply an interpretation. Keep the teacher’s comments with the response, so the next lesson can turn a comment such as “develop this” into a concrete revision the student can explain.

Common difficulties

Retelling replaces analysis

Knowing the plot gives a starting point. We help the student move from what happened to how the writer makes a moment significant, using a short quotation as evidence.

There is no obvious model answer to copy

Students can hesitate when a question invites interpretation. We teach them to test a reading against the text and explain it, while recognising where the evidence leaves room for another view.

How our tutors help

Begin with the assignment brief

Your child’s text, question and teacher feedback tell us what the school expects. IP schools organise their own programmes, so those materials shape the lesson.

Make reading a conversation

The tutor asks what your child noticed and which words support it. They discuss the answer, then put the explanation into a paragraph.

Use feedback in another answer

Students practise the reading and writing taught in class, then try another extract to check what they have learned.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

Do all IP schools teach the same Sec 1 English syllabus?

IP schools design their own programmes and may use English or Language Arts titles. Texts, assignments and assessment schedules vary. We work from your child’s materials and teach transferable reading and writing skills, then apply them to the school’s current expectations.

Can you help with a text you have not listed here?

Share the title, relevant extract and assignment brief when arranging a trial. The team will confirm whether we can help and which class is suitable.

Will the tutor write the school assignment?

Your child writes the assignment. The tutor discusses the text, works through examples and gives feedback to help them develop and revise their own answer.

Is registration open for 2027?
