Sec 2 IP English Tuition

Our tutors help Sec 2 IP English and Language Arts students compare texts, explain interpretations and organise longer answers. Lessons use the school’s assignments and teacher feedback.

Live online classes · Maximum 4 students · 1.5 hours weekly

What we practise

  • Compare how two texts present a shared idea
  • Support an interpretation with carefully selected quotations
  • Develop an argument across paragraphs
  • Use teacher feedback to revise analysis and organisation

Syllabus & assessment

Syllabus sources

IP schools choose their own English and Language Arts texts, tasks and teaching sequence. Lessons follow the student’s schoolwork. The MOE programme source was checked 10 October 2026.

Compare the treatment of an idea

A meaningful comparison asks what each writer does with a shared concern. Two passages may both describe a home, while one makes it reassuring and the other restrictive. Choose the relevant words, images or narrative choices, then explain the difference. The subject alone is not the comparison.

Organise the paragraph around the similarity or difference. Include evidence from both texts and explain how it supports the comparison. Check each point against the question and school marking criteria.

Original practice exampleAn original comparison example

The task

Text A: “The gate stood open for us.” Text B: “The gate clicked shut behind us.” Compare the impressions of arrival.

Worked response

The open gate in A suggests welcome or freedom to enter. In B, the closing sound draws attention to a boundary and may suggest confinement, depending on the surrounding passage.

The answer compares the open gate with the closing gate. The suggestion of confinement in Text B would need support from the rest of the passage.

Turn “develop your analysis” into a revision

A broad teacher comment becomes useful when attached to a particular sentence. Locate the claim, its evidence and the explanation between them. If the explanation simply repeats the claim, ask what the wording makes the reader notice and why that matters. Add the missing reasoning before adding another quotation.

Check what each paragraph adds. If two paragraphs make the same point, combine them or develop a different part of the interpretation. Keep the original question beside the draft while revising.

Common difficulties

Two separate summaries replace a comparison

Writing everything about one text and then the other can leave the relationship unexplained. We teach students to choose a shared question and compare the relevant choices directly.

The quotation carries the whole paragraph

A quotation needs an explanation. The tutor helps the student describe what its words suggest and why that matters to their answer.

How our tutors help

Choose a precise point of comparison

We start with the school brief and identify a manageable shared idea, such as belonging or authority. The student can then select evidence with a purpose.

Test a claim against both texts

The tutor asks whether the comparison fits each passage and where it needs qualification. Students revise their claim before extending it.

Build independence across assignments

Students practise analysis between lessons, then try another task without a writing frame to check what they have learned.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

Is Sec 2 IP English mainly literature?

The balance varies by school. Bring the current text and assignment so we can practise the reading, comparison or writing your child needs for that work.

Can you help with a comparative assignment?

Yes. We help students choose a point of comparison, find evidence in both texts and explain the relationship. Bring the school’s criteria; your child writes and revises the assignment with the tutor’s feedback.

How is progress judged when there is no common national paper?

Use the school’s marking criteria and compare similar answers completed without help. Look for more precise points, better evidence and an order that is easier to follow.

Is registration open for 2027?

Class registration for the 2027 school year is open. Request a trial class using the form. We will message you to confirm your child’s 2027 level and class details.

Is practice included?
