Sec 3 IP English Tuition

Our tutors help Sec 3 IP students support interpretations and develop analytical and argumentative essays. Lessons start with the school’s text, assignment or teacher feedback so we can work on the answer your child is writing.

Live online classes · Maximum 4 students · 1.5 hours weekly

What we practise

  • Develop an interpretation that accounts for tension or ambiguity
  • Analyse how voice, structure and language shape meaning
  • Build arguments with appropriate evidence and qualifications
  • Plan extended responses around the school’s criteria

Make room for evidence that complicates a claim

A character can appear confident while revealing doubt in a small gesture. A speech can promise unity while excluding a group through its language. Strong analysis notices the tension and explains how the details work together. It does not force every quotation to prove the first idea the student had.

Write an initial point, check it against the extract and change it if another detail complicates it. The tutor helps students explain that change and revise the paragraph around it.

The task

“She called the decision obvious, then asked everyone else what they thought.” How might the second action complicate the first statement?

Worked response

Her request for other opinions makes her certainty seem less secure. She may be seeking reassurance despite presenting the decision as straightforward.

The reading accounts for both details and marks the motive as an interpretation. A wider extract could support or challenge it.

Give a longer response a developing argument

Write a one-sentence purpose for each paragraph before drafting. One might establish the speaker’s public position; the next might examine the language that undermines it. The sequence should deepen the answer to the question. Repeating the same point with another quotation creates length without development.

For argumentative assignments, check that examples support the point and include enough context. Bring the school’s research instructions so the tutor can help your child use and acknowledge sources appropriately.

Common difficulties

A neat interpretation ignores difficult evidence

Students may choose a claim early and overlook a detail that complicates it. We teach them to use the complication to refine the argument.

Sophisticated vocabulary masks thin reasoning

The tutor asks the student to explain the point in plain language and show which words support it. They then revise the sentence together.

How our tutors help

Read against the first impression

We test an initial interpretation with a second detail or alternative reading. The student learns when to qualify a claim and when to defend it.

Build a paragraph sequence

The tutor helps the student decide how one paragraph advances the next. A longer response needs a developing line of thought, not a collection of observations.

Apply the feedback in fresh work

Practice between lessons revisits what was taught. The tutor also checks new schoolwork to see what the student can now use on their own.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

Does Sec 3 IP English follow SEC G3 tasks?

IP schools set their own English and Language Arts tasks. We use the school’s brief, marking criteria, texts and assessment dates to plan preparation.

Can you help with argument as well as literary analysis?

Yes. We help students choose a point, use evidence and explain it in both literary analysis and argumentative writing. Lessons follow the type of response the school assignment asks for.

What if my child gets “more depth needed” repeatedly?

Bring a marked paragraph. The tutor checks whether it needs more explanation, stronger evidence or attention to a detail the student overlooked. Your child revises that part, then tries another task.

Is registration open for 2027?

Class registration for the 2027 school year is open. Request a trial class using the form. We will message you to confirm your child’s 2027 level and class details.

Is practice included?
