Learn to select before trying to shorten

Read the question’s focus before choosing what to keep. If a passage gives benefits and costs but the question asks for benefits, leave the costs out. Keep each different benefit and remove examples that repeat a point.

We start with short paragraphs before moving to longer passages and formal summary tasks. Students explain why they kept each point, so the tutor can check their understanding and selection.

“The new cycle racks are covered, stand close to the gate and took two weeks to install.” Select the benefits for students.

Worked response

Students can shelter their bicycles and park near the entrance.

The answer keeps the two benefits and leaves out the installation time, which the question does not ask for.

Make a reason do more work

An opinion paragraph often starts well and stops too soon. “Group work is useful because students help one another” needs a closer explanation. What kind of help? When does it improve understanding? A specific classroom situation can make the reason convincing, provided the writer explains its relevance.

Ask when group work helps. Students might need a shared task and everyone’s contribution. Adding that condition makes the paragraph more precise. Compare earlier and later attempts to see whether your child can explain the point without prompting.

Every sentence seems important

Students who highlight a whole passage need a way to distinguish an idea from its illustration. We practise sorting details by the question’s focus before attempting a concise response.

An example is present but unexplained

A named event does not automatically support a point. The tutor asks what the example demonstrates and helps the student state the connection.

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

Should Sec 2 G2 students start summary writing?

They can develop the underlying skills: identifying a focus, selecting distinct points and expressing meaning concisely. School tasks guide the level of difficulty. The formal G2 examination includes summary, but learning to select accurately is more useful than rushing to meet a word limit.

How do you handle weak grammar alongside good ideas?

We preserve the idea and work on the language problem that makes it difficult to follow. A paragraph may need clearer sentence boundaries or consistent tense before more advanced vocabulary. The next independent attempt checks whether the correction carries over.

What can parents ask after a lesson?

Ask your child to show one part of an answer they changed and explain why. It could be a better summary point, a fuller explanation or a corrected sentence.
