Sec 3 G1 English Tuition

Our tutors help Sec 3 G1 students answer language-use questions, plan complete pieces of writing and develop spoken answers. We work through the tasks before adding timed practice, using school assignments to choose what needs attention.

What we practise

  • Use context to solve vocabulary and grammar cloze tasks
  • Plan situational writing around its reader and required information
  • Develop a recount or description with a clear sequence
  • Prepare reading aloud and responsive spoken interaction

Syllabus & assessment

Use grammar and meaning together

For a vocabulary cloze, read beyond the blank. The surrounding sentences may show whether a word describes a cause, a feeling or a change. For grammar, identify the relationship the missing word must express. A tense decision, for example, depends on when the action happens and how it relates to the rest of the passage.

We ask students why an alternative answer would be wrong. This shows whether they understand the choice. Keep a short note of recurring grammar mistakes and try those rules in new sentences.

The task

Complete: “The visitors waited ___ the guide returned.” Explain your choice.

Worked response

“Until” shows that their waiting continued up to the guide’s return.

The choice expresses the time relationship. A word that merely sounds familiar would not be enough; the student should explain how the two actions connect.

Give every task requirement a place

Before starting situational writing, identify who is writing, who will read the response and what the response needs to achieve. List the required points and decide their order. If the task asks for an explanation, develop the reason; if it asks for a request, make the requested action clear.

Students practise a complete draft before trying it under time. The tutor checks whether all planned points are there and whether the sentences are clear. Oral lessons include both reading aloud and developing answers in conversation.

Common difficulties

Cloze answers are chosen by sound alone

A plausible word may not fit the grammar or meaning of the passage. We teach students to use both kinds of evidence, then reread the completed sentence in context.

The writing reaches its length but misses a requirement

We help students check the task’s content before drafting. The reader should receive every required piece of information, with enough explanation to make it useful.

How our tutors help

Name the reason for each choice

The tutor asks why the student chose a cloze answer or included a writing detail, then works on any difficulty that comes up.

Build a complete response in stages

We move from a content plan to connected paragraphs, then practise checking. Students gradually take responsibility for all three stages.

Use targeted follow-up

Students practise between classes and revisit earlier work through spaced review. Their answers help the tutor plan the next lesson.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

Does G1 English use the same oral task as G2?

The 2027 G1 syllabus uses reading aloud and spoken interaction. G2 uses a planned response and spoken interaction. We prepare G1 students for their own task type, using the official syllabus for the examination year when discussing exact requirements.

Should Sec 3 G1 students practise typing?

The 2027 K100 syllabus states that Writing is delivered via computer. Familiarity with composing, rereading and correcting text on screen is useful alongside language practice. Follow the school’s guidance on the assessment interface and arrangements.

What if written work is much weaker than speaking?

We ask the student to explain the idea aloud, then help them write it in complete sentences. Another short writing task shows whether they can now do that without help.
