Develop the detail that serves the reader

In situational writing, required information needs to do something for the intended reader. A proposal to improve a school space should explain the choice and why it meets a need. Copying the stimulus gives facts; development shows how those facts support the purpose of the response.

The student explains a recommendation aloud before writing it. We ask for a clearer reason or detail where needed, then review the draft’s tone, order and sentences.

The task

Recommend a shaded reading area for students during breaks. Develop the reason beyond “it is useful”.

Worked response

A shaded area would give students a comfortable place to read during sunny breaks, with seating that makes it easy to stay for more than a few minutes.

The answer explains who would use the space and how the shade and seating would help them.

Practise selection in both writing and speaking

A summary and an oral response have different purposes, but both need disciplined selection. For summary, the question decides which source ideas belong. For oral, the prompt and the speaker’s position decide which observations and examples help. In each case, more material can weaken the response if it distracts from the focus.

Before timed practice, students explain which points they chose and why. School feedback helps us see whether they need more work on the ideas, language or pace.

Common difficulties

The composition changes topic halfway through

A student may follow an interesting example away from the question. We teach them to make a plan and check what each paragraph contributes to the required response.

Summary loses meaning while cutting words

Compression can remove a condition or merge different ideas. The tutor helps the student select the right points first and check each shortened version against the passage.

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

Are G2 writing lengths the same as G3?

The 2027 K200 requirements are 180–250 words for situational writing and 250–400 for continuous writing. The exam-format guide lists G1, G2 and G3 separately. Check the syllabus for your child’s examination year.

When should timed practice begin?

Start once the student has a method for the task, then use timing to identify where it breaks down. A timed paragraph or section can be more informative than an early full paper. Sec 3 provides room to teach the underlying skill and revisit it.

Can the class help a student who has ideas but weak answers?

Yes. We discuss the student’s ideas, help put them in order and ask for fuller explanations where needed. They then try another answer without the tutor supplying the wording.
