Sec 1 G3 students often need to explain answers in more detail than they did for PSLE. Our tutors help them read closely, choose evidence and write clear paragraphs using their current schoolwork.

Secondary reading questions often require a student to explain why a particular expression matters. Naming a simile or a strong verb is only a first observation. Ask what picture the expression creates, what it suggests here and how that changes our understanding of the person or situation.
We use short passages so students have time to discuss what a word or image suggests. They practise explaining it in clear language and checking their answer against the text.
The task
“The corridor swallowed his footsteps.” How does the description make the corridor seem?
Worked response
It makes the corridor seem large and empty: his footsteps fade into the space, giving him little sense of company.
The answer explains the image in context. Simply identifying personification would leave the impression unexplained. Other well-supported interpretations may be possible.

A narrative about responsibility needs a moment when the character makes a meaningful choice. Plan that choice before adding the opening description. What happens, why does it matter and what does the character do next? These questions keep the story attached to its topic and prevent a dramatic incident from taking over the whole response.
We use a short scene to teach pacing: slow down where a decision matters and move quickly through routine background. In later independent work, check whether your child can explain that choice without the tutor’s prompt. Bring school feedback to class so the practice addresses the demands your child is meeting now.
We ask students to locate the detail that supports their reading and test whether a different interpretation fits better. The explanation must belong to this passage.
A long sentence can hide a simple idea. We make the meaning clear first, then choose detail and sentence structure that help the reader see it.
The tutor asks your child to explain their answer, then uses that discussion to decide what to teach next.
We compare two paragraphs and discuss what changed: perhaps the cause is clearer or a detail is more relevant. The student then revises their own draft.
Students revisit classwork through practice and spaced review. Another task shows what they can do without help.

Frequently asked questions
Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

Yes. Students practise reading, writing, listening and speaking. Oral tasks include explaining a reason and answering follow-ups; listening tasks ask them to choose the information the question needs. We use schoolwork to set the difficulty.
We teach students to read instructions, answer the question and check their work. Longer and timed tasks come as their reading and writing improve, guided by school feedback.
Look for an answer that uses a relevant detail and explains why it supports the point. Compare answers to similar questions from different passages, completed without help.
