Our tutors help Sec 2 G3 students paraphrase accurately, explain a writer’s choices and develop arguments. Lessons use school assignments to practise these skills before the longer tasks of upper secondary.

An own-words response has to preserve what the original sentence says about its subject. Notice whether it describes a cause, a contrast, a possibility or a degree of feeling. Those relationships are easy to lose when a student replaces individual words one at a time.
We ask the student to explain the sentence conversationally, then write a precise version. Afterward, compare it with the original and look for an added certainty or missing condition. This checking habit supports both short comprehension answers and summary writing, where concision must still preserve the author’s meaning.
The task
Rewrite the meaning of “The scheme could reduce waste if residents use it consistently.”
Worked response
Regular participation by residents may help the scheme cut waste.
The possibility and the condition both remain. “The scheme will end waste” would overstate the claim and remove the role of participation.

A persuasive paragraph can recognise a limitation without abandoning its claim. If a student argues for more independent study, they might acknowledge that new topics sometimes need explanation first. The next sentence should show how that affects the proposal: independence can grow after the teacher has established the method.
We discuss an argument before writing it. The tutor asks about a claim that is too broad, and the student makes it more precise and chooses an example to support it.
Replacing “reluctant” with “afraid” may invent an emotion the passage never establishes. We teach students to explain the original meaning before choosing their own wording.
An opposing view needs a response. The tutor helps the student show whether it limits, strengthens or changes the original position.
We examine two responses and ask which is more faithful to the text. Students learn to notice differences in scope, intensity and cause.
We help students decide what each paragraph adds and choose examples that support their position.
Students revisit paraphrasing, evidence and paragraph writing through practice and spaced review, using different passages and topics.

Frequently asked questions
Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

Useful foundations include accurate reading, relevant evidence, controlled paragraphs, faithful paraphrasing and the ability to explain an opinion. A recent independent task shows which of these needs attention. We use that evidence to plan support for the upper-secondary transition.
Vocabulary should express the intended meaning precisely. A clear verb or specific noun can improve a paragraph more than a long phrase. We develop vocabulary through reading and revision, and ask students to justify a choice by its meaning and tone.
Short tasks give students time to practise a difficulty, such as choosing summary points or answering an opposing view. Longer responses let them put those skills together.
