Choose the writing task you can develop

Before selecting a continuous-writing topic, test whether you can answer all of it. Identify the central idea, the scope and the kind of development required. Sketch the direction of the response. A topic that resembles a practised essay can still ask a different question, so familiarity alone is a weak reason to choose it.

We practise quick plans and discuss whether they answer the question. Does the story’s turning point fit the theme? Do the examples support the argument? Does the conclusion follow from the points made?

The task

A question asks whether competition always improves performance. A plan lists only examples of competition helping. What is missing?

Worked response

The plan needs to consider the word “always”: when might competition fail to help, and how does that affect the position?

The word “always” is part of the question. The essay needs to consider cases where competition might not help.

Make every marked paper change the next practice

For comprehension and summary, record the cause of a missed point: an inaccurate reading, incomplete explanation, weak selection or changed meaning. Choose one pattern and practise it on fresh material. For oral work, listen for development and responsiveness as well as fluency. A confident delivery still needs a relevant answer.

After focused exercises, try a full paper to check pace. Test how much time the student needs for planning, answering and checking, then adjust the routine where they run short.

Common difficulties

A prepared essay does not fit the question

We teach students to test a plan against the actual topic before committing to it. A familiar example must serve the question asked, with a position the student can sustain.

A rushed answer leaves the explanation implicit

The right quotation can still need a sentence showing why it matters. Our tutors help students make that connection directly and concisely.

How our tutors help

Read recent papers for patterns

We choose recurring mistakes from recent papers to work on in class and keep stronger skills in the revision routine.

Test the method under time

After focused practice, students try another timed section. We check how long planning, answering and checking took.

Revisit the skill after the lesson

Practice and spaced review revisit classwork. The tutor checks independent answers to plan the next lesson.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

How many students are in each class?

Four, at most. Students are grouped by learning pace, not just by year level, so each lesson moves at the speed of the students actually in it. When no session matches a child’s pace, we open a new one. In a class that size, every child answers questions, gets their working checked, and gets help the moment they need it.

How much does a dedicated trial session cost?

A dedicated trial session at a different timeslot is offered at a subsidised rate of $30. We’ll help you explore the available options.

What should G3 English revision cover beyond essays?

Comprehension, summary, listening and oral communication need deliberate practice alongside writing. Recent responses show which skills deserve more time. Our tutors connect the four areas through shared habits such as selecting evidence, developing an idea and answering the actual question.

How do you track progress across the four papers?

We compare new answers with earlier ones, looking for the mistakes we worked on. Has the essay stayed on topic? Has the summary kept the meaning? Is the oral answer fuller? Timed tasks also show how the student manages these skills during an assessment.

Does this page apply to O-Level or SEC candidates?

From 2027, students sit SEC G3 English using the K300 syllabus. Preparation follows the document for the student’s examination year, so share that year when arranging a trial.
